Week 6^th – 8^th May

Here we are, again!

This week we went on (continue) talking about clothes.

Clothes you wear on your top half:

Anorak, cardigan, sweater, shirt, vest, T-shirt, can you name more?

Clothes you wear on your bottom half:

Trousers, shorts, jeans, swimming trunks, leggings, can you remember more?

Clothes you wear on your top and bottom half:

Coat, dress, suit, do you know more?

What you wear on your feet:

Shoes, sandals, trainers, boots, can you tell me more?

We read an interesting text about some traditional clothes in the U.K.

Did you know that the name of “cardigan” for the woollen short coat with buttons came from a soldier -Lord Cardigan -, who led the soldiers at the battle of Balaclava. And the name of the battle - balaclava - is the name of a woollen hat that covers head and neck. Also, “wellingtons”-wellies, in short- got their name after another soldier, Wellington. They are rubber boots used for the rain or to work in the garden.

We also learnt the name of the typical hat, bowler hat and apron, slippers and vest.

The old lady is wearing an apron, a cardigan, a skirt, a sweater and slippers. She is carrying a cup of tea in her hand.

The old man is wearing a suit, a vest, a striped tie, a white shirt, a black hat, black shoes and black socks. He is carrying an umbrella and a newspaper.

We also talked about personality and appearance.

Remember:

To be like / look like

    ·            What does your father look like?

He’s tall and slim. He’s got short wavy grey hair and green eyes.

    ·            What is he like?

He’s funny and outgoing. He’s sociable and very talkative. But he’s a little mean when you ask him for money!

Look like a…/ like

 ·               She looks about thirty. / You look tired. / He looks American.

 ·               They look like top models. / He looks like an old man. / He looks like a teacher.

Summing up:

Look like, for physical description.

Be + like, for personality and physical description. Also to describe things in general or giving a general opinion on something. (What’s the food like)

Adjectives

We revised the different uses of “can”.

Ability. Can you play the piano?  I can’t speak Russian.

Requests. Can you help us, please? Can you pass me the salt?

Permission. Can I go to the toilet, please? Can I close the door?

Prohibition. You can’t take photos in here. You can’t park outside the building.

And we finished the week doing a pair activity. We had to find ten differences in the pictures. We only found three so we’ll continue tomorrow!

Yes, tomorrow. Remember that we changed the class on Tuesday 13^th for Monday 12^th!

Tuesday 29^th April

Hello!

This was a really short week. We only had class one day because we had a long weekend.

Thursday was 1^st May. May Day Celebrations and Traditions in the UK.

May Day in the UK

We talked about free time activities and how men and women have different hobbies.

For example:

·         Women hate watching football. Men love watching football.

·         Women like buying presents. Men hate buying presents.

·         Women don’t like playing chess. Men like playing chess.

Of course, they are stereotypes because some men like buying presents and some women like playing chess!

Anyway, I hope that by now you will remember to use “-ing” after like, love, hate, enjoy, don’t mind.

We finished the dialogue about shopping for clothes.

·         Can I help you?

·         Yes, please. Do you have these jeans in black.

·         What size are you?

·         Medium.

·         These are Medium. Would you like to try them on?

·         Yes, please.

·         The changing rooms are over there.

·         How are they?

·         They’re fine. I’ll take them.

·         Anything else?

·         No, thank you. How much is it?

·         It’s £49.95

·         Can I pay by credit card?

·         Of course.

·         Here you are. Bye.

Week 22^nd – 24^th April

Hello!

Last week we talked about what we like or don’t like doing.

·         Eugene loves watching sci-fi movies.

·         Luis loves playing games with his son because he always win!

·         Laura likes listening to music.

·         Juan loves cooking but he doesn’t like cleaning afterwards!

·         Nuria enjoys reading.

We read about “The Kumbh Mela bathing festival”

·         What is the ‘Kumbh Mela bathing festival’?

It’s a ceremony for Hindis where they celebrate their religion.

·         Where does it take place (happen)?

It takes place in one of four cities in India.

·         When is it?

It isn’t celebrated on a fixed date. It takes place every three years in April or May.

·         How do people get there?

They get there on special trains which are crowded (very full).

·         Where do people stay?

They stay at camps.

And we went shopping for clothes.

·         Can I help you?

·         I’m just looking, thanks

·        Yes, I’d like that T-shirt.

·        What size are you?

·        I´m Medium.

·        Here you are. Would you like to try it on?

·        No, it’s OK. How much is it?

Shops and Shopping

Week 8^th -10^th April

This week we talked about our favourite time of the day, season, month…

Cristina’s favourite season is spring because she loves gardening.  What about you? Do you have green fingers? ( Are you good at gardening?)Luis’s favourite season is autumn, when school begins and holidays are over, because everything comes to normal!

Cristina’s favourite time of the day is the evening. From 10 p.m. on, because is when she goes home and starts to relax. Luis agrees (he thinks the same). The evening, when his son goes to bed, is his favourite time of the day!

And then, we changed of subject and started to talk about shopping!

·         Do you like shopping?

·         What do you like buying? CDs, DVDs, clothes, books, presents?

·         Do you prefer shopping alone or with your family? With friends?

·         When do you like going shopping?  To shopping centres, small shops, supermarkets?

Remember:

Love, like, enjoy, prefer, hate + ing

·         I don’t like buying clothes.

·         I hate going shopping on Saturdays.

·         He doesn’t like trying on clothes.

·         She hates going shopping with her boyfriend.

·         He loves buying presents.

Men and women are different. Men like clothes shops, electronics shops and music shops. Women love clothes shops, clothes shops and clothes shops!

Men spend one hour shopping, women a day! Women love trying on clothes and talking to the shop assistants; men love going home and playing with their new “toys”.

Holidays and Festivals!

Week 1^st – 3^rd April

Hello my dear students!

We finished talking about detective stories and robberies and we continued using the past tense to talk about HOLIDAYS!!!

We read and answered questions about a holiday in Rome. And you told me about other holidays you had had.

On holiday you can go sightseeing, go to restaurants, go to the beach, sunbathe, buy souvenirs, go to museums, see shows and, of course, relax!

We listened to a dialogue in a souvenir shop.  Do you buy souvenirs when you go on holiday? What souvenirs do you buy?

We learnt some vocabulary related to geography.

Have you ever seen the bloom of the cherry trees in the Jerte valley?

Would you like to visit the Niagara waterfalls?

Which is the longest river in Spain?

A hill is lower than a mountain.

A forest is a group of trees.

A lake is a body of water surrounded by land.

An island is land surrounded by water.

An ocean is bigger than the sea.

A stream is a narrow current of water.

We reviewed ordinal numbers and dates and read about famous festivals.

The Tomatina takes place (happens) on the last Wednesday in August, in Buñol, Spain.People throw tomatoes.

Carnevale d’Ivrea takes place in Italy, in January (the exact date changes each year). People that take part (participate) in this festival, throw oranges at each other.

Songkran is a Thai (from Thailand) water festival that takes place on 13^th  April. People throw water at each other.

"Murder in a Country House"

Week 18^th – 20^th March

Here we are again!

Now that we know the names of the rooms in a house and the furniture, let’s play “Cluedo”.

“Murder in a country house”

Mr Jeremy Travers, a famous and rich businessman was murdered on June 22^nd 1938. On that day the family and Gordon, his business partner were at Jeremy’s country house celebrating Jeremy’s 60^th birthday. They had dinner and went to bed. Next morning, when his wife Amanda went to wake up Jeremy, she found him in his bed…dead!

We suspected of Amanda, his wife. Her motive could be that she knew her husband was having an affair with his secretary, Claudia. We also suspected of Claudia. She was angry because Jeremy promised her to leave his wife, but, he didn’t.

Gordon and Barbara, Jeremy’s daughter, had an alibi. They played cards together after dinner. So, who did it?

Eugene thought it was Gordon… and he was right!

Gordon was in love with Jeremy’s daughter. Jeremy didn’t want Gordon to marry his daughter because he thought that Gordon only wanted the money. He said, “If you marry my daughter, all my money will be for my secretary.” So, Gordon got angry and murdered him!

How did Eugene know? He said it’s because he read a lot of books by Agatha Christie. He also said that business partners, women and money aren’t a good combination…

In my opinion, he had read the story before!

Houses and Furniture

Week 11^th – 13^th March

Hello again!

Yes, we continued talking about appearance and descriptions.

She is an actress. She’s got medium – length straight blonde hair. She is tall and slim. She’s got green eyes. She isn’t Spanish. She’s beautiful. Who is she?

He’s a Spanish sportsman. He has short wavy brown hair and brown eyes. He’s not very tall. He doesn’t look very friendly because he is very serious. He doesn’t have a beard or a moustache. He wears red overalls when he works.

Who is he?

And we continued talking about going out.

·         Where did you go last night?

·         I went to a new jazz club in town.

·         Was it good?

·         Yes, it was great!

·         Who did you go with?

·         I went with my boyfriend and some friends.

·         What did you wear?

·         I wore my long denim skirt and a new top I bought last week.

·         What time did you get home?

·         We got home at about three.

·         Did you get a taxi home?

·         No, my boyfriend has a car.

And we started learning vocabulary about houses and furniture.

·         Do you live in a house or in a flat?

·         Is there a garden?

·         How many floors are there in your house?

·         How many rooms are there downstairs?

·         Is there a bath upstairs?

·         How many bedrooms are there?

·         Is there a garage?
