Food & Restaurants

Week 3rd – 5th June

Hello everyone!

So, one of you was angry because she was hungry! But I told you to eat lunch before coming to class because we were going to talk about food!

We finished reading about traditional British food. Can you read the text again and answer these questions?

·         What does the traditional English breakfast consist of?
·         When is it traditional to eat pancakes in the UK?
·         What do the British usually serve with roast beef?
·         What is ‘Haggis’? When do people eat it? Where?
·         What are the two meanings of the word ‘tea’?
·         What do people put inside the Christmas pudding that brings good luck?
·         What’s the ‘legend’ about hot cross buns?
·         What’s the typical lunch in pubs?
·         Do you think you would like beer in the U.K.? Why/why not?

We listened to and role played dialogues at a restaurant.

There are usually three courses on the menu:

Starters, Main Courses and desserts. And there are also drinks.

Mark and Allie are at a restaurant. They talk:

-       What are you going to have for starter?
-       I’m going to have prawns for starter.
-       What are you going to have for the main course?
-       I’m going to have steak and chips for the main course.
-       (steak /steik/ meat; not /stɪck/ a hockey stick or a glue stick!)
-       What are you going to have for dessert?
-       I’m going to have strawberry flan for dessert.
-       (for dessert /dɪssert/ not for the Sahara desert /desert/)
-       What would you like to drink?
-       I’d like coke.

We role-played: “At a restaurant”

Waiter: Good evening. Have you got a reservation?
Customer 1: Yes, in the name of Higgings.
Waiter: A table for two. Is that right?
Customer 2: yes, it is.
Waiter: come this way, please.Your  table. This is the menu
 (Pause)
Waiter: Are you ready to order?
Customer 1: Yes. I’ll have _______ for starter, ________ for the main
course and ________ for dessert. What would you like?
Customer 2:  I’d like  _______ for starter, ________for the main
                     course and _______ for dessert.
Waiter: what would you like to drink?
Customers 1 and 2: could you bring us  ________ ?

The waiter brings the food. They eat. When they finish eating:

Customer 1: Excuse me. Can you bring me the bill?
Waiter: Here you are. Your change, thank you.
Customers 1 and 2: Thank you. Good bye!

Remember to use: I’ll have, I’d like, Can you…? Could you …? And ‘Excuse me’, if you want to attract somebody’s attention.

See you tomorrow! And remember, have lunch before the class!
